พระพรหมคุณาภรณ์ (ป.อ.ปยุตโต) เป็นพระมหาเถระที่ได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นปราชญ์ที่สำคัญที่สุด
ของพุทธศาสนาไทยในปัจจุบัน ว่าจำเพาะสมณศัก

เมื่อครั้งที่ท่านยังเป็นเจ้าอาวาสวัดพระพิเรนทร์ แม้ได้รับสมณศัก
ดิ์เป็นพระราชวรมุนี และเป็นที่รู้จักอย่างกว้างขวาง
โดยเฉพาะเมื่อหนังสือพุทธธรรม ฉบับขยายความ ได้ตีพิมพ์เผยแพ

ยวันเกิดบ้าง ในวันสำคัญทางศาสนาบ้าง หรือแสดงมุทิตาจิตที่
ได้รับพระราชทานเลื่อนสมณศักดิ์บ้าง ของที่นำมาถวายนั้น
เป็นสิ่งของเครื่องใช้มากมาย แต่เมื่อเสร็จงานแล้ว ท่าน
จะเก็บแต่เฉพาะหนังสือไว้ ส่วนของอื่น ๆ ท่านจะแจกต่อให้
แก่พระเณรในวัด
ของถวายบางอย่างบรรจุใส่กล่องสวยงาม บางกล่องก็ห่อเป
็นของขวัญ ท่านก็ไม่เปิดดูด้วยซ้ำว่าข้างในเป็นอะไร
